Smarter Than the Average Bear
by Tom Chaffin
A review of Duff, the Story of a Bear by William Marshall Rush
|
| Duff, the Story of a Bear, William Marshall Rush. 149 pages, grades 4-6. The author traces the life of a Black Bear in early America, from a yearling to adulthood. The adventure of the story centers around Duff’s dangerous encounters with grizzlies, older black bears, and homesteaders whose cabins and animals Duff and other bears occasionally ravage in search for food, and their relentless attempts to hunt him down as a major obstacle to the homesteaders’ attempts to tame the American wilderness. This is a well-written volume, absent objectionable themes (except for a mild anti-hunting bent) and inappropriate language. There is some violence – the violence of wild animals in nature and hunters shooting them, but even that is handled tastefully by the author. Boys will especially enjoy this book. This book is in the GCS Library, in Junior Fiction. |
