"Put Your Jacket On!"
by Tom Chaffin
A review of The Leather Greatcoat by Thomas L. Robertson
|
| The Leather Greatcoat, Thomas L. Robertson. 153 pages, grades 4-6. Charles Bradley, an English youth emigrates from England to the new colony of Georgia in 1738 with his father after his mother’s death, only to be saved from a shipwreck on the American coast – as an orphan. Keeping a promise made to his mother on her deathbed, he guards his sole possession, his father’s old greatcoat. As the British battle the Spanish for dominance of the new world, Charles is swept into danger, conspiracy, and high adventure, along with the Brent family that has taken him in. The book is reasonably well-written, seems to be historically accurate, and absent objectionable themes, inappropriate language, and graphic violence. This book is in the GCS Library, in Junior Fiction. |
