Description:
Students learn so many valuable new skills and strategies in fourth grade!
In Language Arts, we read three novels: Island of the Blue Dolphins, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and By the Great Horn Spoon. As the students read these novels, they learn how to draw conclusions, make inferences, discover symbolism, identify plot elements, and analyze characters. Beside all this, they improve their reading fluency and basic understanding of the text. One of our highlights this year happened during our reading of Island of the Blue Dolphins. We took a field trip to the Channel Islands to experience life on the island for ourselves!
In math, the students learn new concepts in multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, pre-algebra, geometry, probability, and several other areas. We use hands-on experiences so students are able to gain a full understanding of the processes that must take place in order to solve math problems.
Most students enter fourth grade already anticipating the year ahead because of two events that take place within our Social Studies curriculum. The first of these two events is a musical titled “Gold Dust or Bust”. It follows the theme of fourth grade Social Studies, which is California history—and more specifically, the Gold Rush. The second event also takes place near the end of the year; it is our overnight field trip to our state capital, Sacramento, and to Coloma, the town where the first gold nugget was discovered.
In science, we study a variety of topics, including the moon, life cycles, characteristics of living things, insects and arachnids, and more. Fourth grade Bible class is a journey through the Old Testament. We watch God care for His people and fulfill His promises, including His promise to provide a Savior for all people.
Every day in fourth grade is packed full of learning and thinking. The students leave the classroom each afternoon with new knowledge, skills, or problem solving strategies to use in their everyday lives.
